about

Conceptually, ‘The Crow‘ has the loosest grip on the record’s allegory. While still indulging in the story of Texas Red, the song threatens to reveal something of its authors' own experience. In Texas’ journey it’s steadily implied the event that spurred his original descent into depravity was the death of a father figure. The crow, raven or similar corvid are commonly symbolic of fatherhood across many world mythologies. One in particular is pursued by Texas, unknowingly following in the footsteps of the parent he lost to chaos. In the greek epic convention of katabasis, heroes are described often as descending to the underworld to rescue their paternal figures. In the tradition of this ancient narrative device Texas follows suit, and we find him here in this song, frail and exposed, confronting his long suppressed demons.
